History and growing traditions

Aleppo pepper is named for the city and growing tradition around Aleppo in northern Syria. Its dried, crushed form became valued in Syrian cooking because it adds chile warmth alongside savory dishes, dips, and vegetables. The Syrian conflict disrupted local farming and trade; growers have also produced Aleppo-type peppers in Turkey.
